Things To Keep In Mind When Your Kids Go Off To College

Sending your kids off to college is a bittersweet moment. On the one hand, you are happy they are ready to embark on their own adventure and pursue higher education. On the other hand, it means they will be far away from home and out of your reach for many months. But like any other transition in life, there are things you can do to help make sure they have an enjoyable and successful college experience.

Here are 21 tips that should be kept in mind when your kids go off to college:

1) Encourage them to stay organized

Keeping track of assignments, deadlines and other important tasks can quickly become overwhelming if not managed properly. Encourage your children to use organization tools like calendars or apps, so they can stay on top of their academic and extracurricular commitments. This will allow them to stay focused on their studies and prevent them from becoming overwhelmed.

2) Help them plan their budget

Most college students are on a tight budget. Encourage your children to create a budget before they go off to school so that they can manage their finances in an effective way. Giving advice on how to best use credit cards or bank accounts responsibly should also be part of this conversation.

3) Encourage them to get involved

Getting involved in activities outside of the classroom can be beneficial for college students in many ways, including helping them make new friends, discovering new interests, and learning important life skills. Remind your kids that there’s more than just studying at college, so encourage them to explore extracurricular activities, join student organizations, or volunteer.

4) Teach them about the importance of networking

Networking is an invaluable skill that can help your kids build successful careers and relationships down the line. Help them understand the importance of making connections with peers, professors, and professionals in their field by attending events, joining clubs, or even just striking up conversations with people they meet on campus.

5) Help them create positive social habits

College life can be overwhelming at times, so it’s important to encourage your kids to practice self-care and develop healthy habits while they are away from home. This could include getting enough sleep each night, setting boundaries with friends, limiting the amount of time they spend on social media, and managing their stress levels.

6) Teach them about the importance of physical health

In order to be able to make the most out of college life, it’s important for students to take care of their physical health as well. Remind your children that eating healthy and exercising regularly is essential for maintaining energy levels and concentration throughout the day.

7) Encourage mental wellness

College can be a stressful time for many students, so remind them that it’s ok to ask for help if needed. Encourage your children to reach out to family and friends at home or look into therapy or counseling available on campus when necessary. Mental health should always be taken seriously, so make sure your kids know that it’s ok to talk about it.

8) Teach them how to be independent

College is an excellent opportunity for children to learn how to take care of themselves and become more independent. Remind them that it’s ok to make mistakes and that they will likely grow and learn from their experiences away from home. Encourage them to embrace the freedom college brings and develop life skills such as cooking, budgeting, laundry, and cleaning up after themselves.

9) Discuss the risks of alcohol consumption

Drinking can have serious consequences if not done responsibly, so remind your children about making safe choices when consuming alcohol while in college. Encourage them to be aware of their surroundings and the risks associated with underage drinking or substance abuse. They need to know that as a result, bad things can happen like getting hit by a bus or even worse, loss of life.
