How to Have a Smooth Move With Children

Moving into a new home is not such an easy task. Combine children into the equation; then it could be a whole lot more difficult. Children will have their own ideas about the move. If you are moving far away, they will likely be concerned and worried about leaving everything they have ever known and their friends and having to start all over again. Where you may have moved several times in your life, the home you are leaving may be the only home they have ever known. So, that makes moving with kids quite a delicate affair. Not to mention the actual logistics of it all. So, it helps you out, here are a few pieces of advice.

Tell Your Children

First of all, you cannot hide the fact you are moving from your children. The sooner you tell then, the better it will be. They need time to adjust to the idea. If you think that telling them a week before the move to avoid tantrums is a good idea, think again. After you have told them, listen to their concerns and worries and talk about them. Let them know that you are there for them and explain why you are making such as big move. Tell them in language they will understand too. Highlight all the positive aspects of the move and that they can still keep in touch with their friends, and that you will invite them to come over once everything is sorted. It is up to you to monitor your children to ensure that they are handling the emotional aspect of moving well. Have daily heart-to-hearts and let them know you always have their best interests to heart.  

Involve Them

Treat your children a little like adults. Give them some responsibilities. Perhaps you could even let them make a few calls for you, like making contact with the removals firms like North American Van Lines. This may help them have a little fun and to feel that they have some control over what is happening to them. They can declutter their rooms and start packing their own toys and clothes. Maybe you could help them make some money by selling some of the toys they no longer want. This may give them a little more incentive to get going. When you go to the new house, why not let the children choose their own rooms? You want them to feel a comfortable and happy as possible. 

Goodbyes

Before you move, you should organize a party for your children to let them say goodbye to everyone. Perhaps you could even help them create a scrapbook and connect with this parent so n social media if your children are too young for it. 

Moving Day

If possible, have someone else look after the kids. Even if you are moving far, someone else could take care of them until you are ready to pick them up and take them. Make sure you have an essentials bag to easily get their things when they need them.
